Walking into a chiropractic clinic for the first time can feel uncertain. You've heard the sound of spinal adjustments online and you're not sure if it's going to hurt, what you'll need to take off, or how long you'll be there. Let me give you the complete picture before you arrive.
Wear loose, comfortable clothing. Athletic pants, yoga clothes, or athletic shorts are ideal. We need to assess your movement and apply manual techniques to your spine and pelvis — clothing that restricts bending, rotating, or lying face-down makes that significantly harder. Avoid stiff jeans, business suits, or tight dresses. If you forget and show up in work clothes, we usually have shorts available, but plan ahead.
Your first appointment is longer than subsequent visits. Budget 60 minutes for your initial consultation. We'll take a detailed health history (what's hurting, when it started, what makes it better or worse, your previous treatments, your overall health history). We'll then conduct a hands-on orthopedic and neurological examination — testing your reflexes, sensation, muscle strength, and joint range of motion. If X-rays are clinically indicated, we take them in-house.
We will adjust you on your first visit if it's appropriate. Many patients assume the first visit is just consultation and the adjustment comes on visit two. At Ridgeline, if the exam findings support immediate treatment, we treat. You'll leave with relief, not just a plan.
Tell us everything about your pain. The details that seem irrelevant often aren't. That tingling in your left foot that comes and goes? Tell us. The fact that your pain started two weeks after you moved apartments? Tell us. The more clinical picture we have, the more precise your treatment can be.
After your adjustment, you may feel two things: relief, or mild soreness. Most patients feel immediate improvement in mobility and reduction in pain. A subset — particularly first-time patients or those with long-standing chronic conditions — experience muscle soreness similar to post-exercise fatigue, which typically resolves within 24–48 hours. This is normal. Drink extra water, apply ice for 15 minutes if sore, and move gently. Call us if the soreness is severe or if you experience any new symptoms.
Bring any imaging you already have. If you've had X-rays or an MRI, bring them on a disc or access the digital copy through your patient portal. We don't require prior imaging, but it saves time and spares you unnecessary re-imaging.
